ENCOUNTER

A Journey by Chance

This is a project that was inspired by the current status of development that is happening in Punggol, Singapore. As a new town, Punggol was divided into Punggol Point, Punggol Promenade and Punggol Waterway. Currently, the development focuses on the Punggol Waterway to transform it into a 21st century urban park. It is an important identity of the new Punggol town as it carries the ambition of having a city in a garden. However, the underdeveloped Punggol Promenade performs as a 19th century urban park which serves as an escape or change of perception from urban life. The transitioning in between these two parks has reminisced about an evergreen legend, the Tao Hua Yuan, the story of a fisherman who encountered a hidden civilisation on his daily routine. This project aims to respond as a 21st century Tao Hua Yuan, where nature becomes a dreamy encounter in the context of an urban life.

Inspired by the wall scribbling at the site, hidden magnet mechanism was designed to sustain the touch of wind, leaving patterns that are formed by nature and human.

Otter watching in the evening.

As the sun sets, the opening that captures the evening sun creates immersive water reflection in the space.

When the development of Punggol reaches a more mature stage, urbanization will slowly replace the beauty of the site. In within this transformation period, this project becomes a temporary observatory platform to witness the change on this last green soul.

This project aims to respond as an encounter for the animals as well. Water engagement was designed to reach out to the animals. All gaps also function as an immediate exit for the animals other than just a feature of visual transparency.

The completion of the Punggol development marks the end of the project. Nonetheless, it evolves into a space in memory for its believers, which can never be found anymore.
